March 4, 2008 Miami Gardens, Fl. - Here is your Spring Break edition of Gene's Team, weekly roundup of the standout athletes here at St. Thomas University. It was a rough week for Bobcat fans that had to deal with the recent ending of the men's basketball season. The baseball team went 0-3 this week dropping 3 games to Warner Southern. The softball team started the week great with two wins to Webber International but lost two games each to Warner Southern and SCAD. On the other hand, the men's tennis team earned a historic win against Northwood University. It was the first time the Bobcats defeated the Northwood tennis team in over a decade. Here are your players of the week: Antonio Jones - In the final game of the season Jones put on a show for the Northwood fans. Jones finished the game with team highs in scoring, rebounding, and assists (29/6/4) but his best moment came at the end of regulation. With a minute to go it seemed like all hope was lost for the Bobcats. Jones then went on to score 10 points in less then a minute to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately the Bobcats were not able to score in the final possession and Northwood won 88-86. Jones, who led the conference in scoring with 26 ppg, was recognized this week by making First Team All-Conference. Kenneth Evans - Evans makes the team this week for his hand in a historic win against Northwood. He won his singles match 6-1, 6-1 and also teamed up with Diego Paredes to win a doubles match 8-5. Evans also played well earlier in the week against St. Vincent when he won his singles match 6-1, 6-3 and his doubles match with Adam Perez 8-5. The men's tennis team now has a season record of 3-6. Ricardo Vasquez - Vasquez was another player who performed well for the tennis team. In the win against Northwood he won his singles match 6-0, 6-2 and his doubles match with Jeremy Bache 8-3. In the win against St. Vincent, Vasquez won his singles match 6-1, 6-0 and his doubles match with Paredes 8-1. The men's tennis team will play their next match at home against St. Joesph's this Friday at 2:00 PM. Mauricio Rodriguez - It was a rough weekend for the baseball team which was swept by Warner Southern. Despite this, Rodriguez was a rare bright spot in the Bobcats line up. He had a .600 hitting percentage for the weekend and 1 run. The Bobcats will have a chance to put that series behind them when they play the Florida Memorial Lions this Tuesday at 6:00 PM. |
