April 26, 2008

Box Score

Miami Gardens, Fl. - The St. Thomas University softball team picked up two wins Saturday afternoon by beating the Northwood Seahawks 5-1 and 3-2. Gina Guffanti was the winning pitcher in both games allowing only 1 earned run in 12 innings. Monica Garcia was the Bobcats best hitter going 3-6 with 3 runs over both games. In between games, seniors Dru Daniels, Claritza Valle, and Katherine Landress were honored for their academic and athletic achievements here at St. Thomas University.

The first game started out exciting with the Bobcats scoring all of their runs in the first 2 innings. Jenny Sanchez batted in the first run of the day on a single in the first inning before the Bobcats put up 4 more runs in the second. Monica Garcia, Koelly Kempisty, and Claritza Valle all batted in runs while Nikki Sanchez reached home on an error in the second inning. Meanwhile, Guffanti was dominant on the mound pitching 5 innings and striking out 7 batters. Nikki Sanchez came in during the 6th inning and earned the save.

The second game started just as fast but this time it was Northwood who would score first. They put up 2 runs in the first inning but Guffanti would then get back to her dominant ways by not allowing another run in the game. Tina Diaz batted in a run in the second inning before Katherine Landress and Monica Garcia scored in a game winning in the 6th inning.

With these two wins the Bobcats improve their record to 20-16 overall and 11-11 in the Florida Sun Conference.
