The Bobcats needed more defense like Cindy Castrillon plays above.

Lack of defense results in Bobcat loss

Feb. 15, 2008

Babson Park, Fla. - After stringing together four straight wins the St. Thomas University women's basketball team suffered their second worst defeat of the season, losing to the Webber International Warriors 82-62.

Adrienne Iannone and Ciarra Carter led the Warriors (12-10, 7-4 in the FSC) in scoring with 13 each, while Cindy Castrillon was the high scorer for the Bobcats (14-9, 5-6 in FSC) with 20 points. It was her seventh game of the season with 20 points or more.

The Bobcats scored the first basket of the game after Castrillon passed the ball to Carissa Staiano for a three-pointer. The early three-pointer was apart of an efficient Bobcat offense which scored on five of their first seven possessions. The Warriors started the game well on offense also scoring on their first six possessions.

The Warrior offense would continue to have success throughout the game. The Warriors shot 51 percent from the field, much better than the 36 percent the Bobcats normally force opponents to shoot from the field.

Unlike the Warriors the Bobcats experienced a sharp decline in accuracy after the fast start and the Bobcats would trail 34-30 at the half. The free-throw line helped the Bobcats keep up with the Warriors in the first half. They made four more free-throws than the Warriors. Francesca Dernocelley, who ended the game with 13 points made three of her four free-throws in the first half.

The Warriors began the second half with an 11 to three scoring run which allowed them to take over the game. An 11 to four scoring run for the Warriors would soon follow and boost the Warriors' total to 82, the most scored against St. Thomas all season.

The Bobcats will look to get their defense back on track against Warner Southern, on the road, February 16 at 4 PM.
