Bobcats improve record to 14-8

Bobcats light up the Southeastern University Fire

Feb. 11, 2008

Box Score

The St. Thomas Women's Basketball Team has gone 4-0 on their recent home stand after crushing the Southeastern University Fire 64-39. Francesca Dernocelley played outstanding with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 5 steals. The leading scorer for the Fire was Casey Jensen with 17 points.

The Bobcats came out playing the same way they have been playing for the last few games. They were fiercely attacking the basket and playing lock down defense which gave them an early lead. Cindy Castrillon shot lights out from the start with a 62% field goal percentage in the first half.

The Bobcats also did a stellar job of grabbing offensive rebounds in the first half with 9. It was a team wide effort too with every player in the first half grabbing at least one offensive board. The Bobcats had an 11 point lead at the end of the first half but it was only going to get worse for the Fire.

When Southeastern came out in the second half there swagger had been lost. They were turning the ball over more often and missed 24 second half baskets. A lot can be said about the way the Bobcats played the passing lanes. They forced 27 turnovers overall with 20 of them coming off steals. Dernocelley, Brittany Owens, and Haleema Linares all had 3 or more steals but Carrisa Staiano ruled that stat column. Staiano came up big with 6 steals and also had an incredible block in transition. When the night was over the Bobcats held the opposition to 27.5% from the field and got the W.

With this 8th home victory in a row the Bobcats improve their record to 14-8. They have a 5-5 record in the Florida Sun Conference but have two conference games left. The first of the two will be this Friday at Webber International.
