Bobcats crush the number one team in the conference

St. Thomas pulls off the blow out against Northwood

Feb. 9, 2008

Box Score

The St. Thomas Women's Basketball Team pulled off a shocking upset against Northwood University Saturday afternoon 62-36. Cindy Castrillon and Francesca Dernocelley were the high scorers for the Bobcats with 16 points each. Bari Levy was the only player for the Seahawks to score in double figures with 11.

The size and speed of Northwood, the top team in the conference, was evident right from the pre-game shoot-around and there were not many who thought St. Thomas had a shot at winning. The Bobcats came out and showed they were not intimidated whatsoever by playing lockdown defense on the Seahawks. In fact, their defense in the first half was so good they did not allow a field goal for almost 8 minutes into the game.

The Bobcats kept the pressure on the offensive side of the ball as well. The ball movement was stellar and showed they were not afraid to take it too the rack either. The Bobcats finished the first half up by 14 points while holding the Seahawks to 13% shooting and forcing 12 turnovers.

The Bobcats came out in the second half and never fell asleep on the Seahawks. They continued with their fantastic defense forcing the opposition to take low percentage shots. There was not a minute in the 2nd half where the Bobcats opened a door for the Seahawks to make a run.

In the end the damage to the Seahawks was severe. St. Thomas held their opponents to 20% shooting from the field and forced them to miss 18 3-point shots. The Bobcats also out rebounded the Seahawks 41-31 thanks to Haleema Linares' team high 9 boards.

The St. Thomas Women's Basketball Team once again proved their dominance at home. This is their 7th straight home win and now have a 13-8 record overall. The Bobcat's next game will be at home this Monday at 6:00 PM against Southeastern University. It will be their last home game of the regular season so make sure you come out to cheer for your St. Thomas Women's Basketball Team!
