Gene's Team (week 6)
March 12, 2008
It's time for another edition of Gene's Team, the weekly roundup of the standout athletes here at St. Thomas University. The men's and women's tennis team had a harsh week as both could not find a way to win a match. The story was a little different for the softball and baseball team. The softball team bounced back to .500 with 2 wins against Northwestern College and a win against Aquinas College. The baseball team went 2-0 with wins against Florida Memorial and Wilmington. Here are your standout athletes for this past week: Nick Martinez - Martinez makes the roster this week for his outstanding work in both of last weeks games. The starting catcher for the Bobcats had a .555 batting average for the week and also racked up 6 RBI's. He also brought the fans out of their seats with a home run in both games. Martinez currently leads the Bobcats in home runs (5) and RBI's (18). With an overall record of 7-9 the baseball team will travel to Ft. Pierce on March 12th to take on Mansfield University. Mauricio Rodriguez - Making Gene's Team two weeks straight is a difficult task but Rodriguez can not be ignored for his performance this week. Against Florida Memorial he played designated hitter and went 4-2 with 2 RBI's. In the next game against Wilmington Rodriguez was the starting pitcher and decisively earned the win. He had an amazing 8 strike outs and only allowed 4 runs. Rodriguez currently leads the Bobcats in hitting percentage (.556) and on base percentage (.692). The next home game for the Bobcats will be the Friday, March 14th against Palm Beach Atlantic at 6:00 PM. Koely Kempisty - Kempisty had a stellar series against Aquinas which earned her a spot on this weeks roster. In a series that the Bobcats split, Kempisty had an outstanding .833 batting average. She also batted in 2 pivotal runs in the first game which helped give the Bobcats the win. After a rough start to the season the softball team has climbed back to .500 with a 6-6 overall record. Nikki Sanchez - The first game against Aquinas was a close one and Bobcat fans can thank Sanchez for earning the win. Sanchez pitched the entire game and only allowed 1 earned run while striking out 4 batters. The next double header for the softball team will be Saturday, March 15th when they go on the road to face Mount St. Vincent. |
