Vargas' hat trick gets her FSC recognition
Oct. 4, 2007
Miami Gardens, Fla - After netting a hat trick most player's friends, family and teammates would probably pat them on the back, maybe even say `good job,' yet Sandra Vargas is surrounded by people who expects her to produce the amazing. "They said, `it's about time'," Vargas said. "I guess because I've always been a scorer." The Florida Sun Conference was little more impressed by Vargas' three goals against Warner Southern. She was named FSC Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 30. Vargas was happy to receive the honor but could not help concentrating on her picture, claiming she wishes the conference used another one. Her concentration in this situation may have been diverted from the prize, on the field that is not the norm. "When I'm playing, I really don't think anything, I'm concentrating on the ball, and where my teammates are and the defenders are," Vargas said. Her concentration has help lead the Bobcats to a 6-2 record overall. She is currently third in the conference in game winning goals, second in shots and fifth in shots on goal. At the beginning of the season Vargas set a goal to end this season and her career at St. Thomas the all time leader in goals for a season and over a career. This year she has scored five goals in seven games and before the start of the 2007 season she totaled 30 goals in three seasons. Vargas said she has been playing since she was little and has known she was good at handling ball and placing it in the back of the net for a long time. Despite all that Vargas still relies on some superstition. Since the Bobcats' first win and second game of the season, Vargas has been placing team captain Carly Laskowski's captain arm band on her for good luck. "(Vargas) is a leader and a role model on the team, Melissa Chang, FSC Defensive player of the week for the week ending September 5, 2007 said. "I'm glad she did get the award, she helps the team a lot." Other St. Thomas nominees for their performance during the week include; Melissa Chang, Women's Soccer Defensive player of the week; Jan Wiechmann, Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week; Maria Roman, Volleyball Player of the Week; and Julianne Rivera, Volleyball Setter of the Week. |
