Bobcats beat ranked opponent

Oct. 20, 2007

Box Score

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- Jan Wiechman scored early and strong defensive play by the Bobcats made that enough to defeat and shut out No. 21 Savannah College of Art and Design 1-0.

The St. Thomas (4-10-1 FSC 1-8) win was their first in Florida Sun Conference play and second shut out victory in a row. The Bees (9-5 FSC 5-4) lost the game despite out shooting the Bobcats 20 to six.

Jan Wiechmann scored the only goal of the match at the 25:22 mark. Gabe Renteria found Wiechmann in the box and he was able to poke the ball into the left corner of the goal.

Bobcat goalkeeper Diego Villagos gets credit for the shutout in a performance which featured 10 saves. Villagos received help from his teammates and the eyes of the referees who disallowed the only shot to sneek by him on an offside call.

The Bobcats were not intimidated by the Bees national ranking. During the game the Bobcats looked the Bees in the eyes and played a physical and aggressive game. The Bobcats committed 21 fouls while the Bees committed 10.

The Bobcats play again October 23 at Warner Southern at 7 PM.
