Gene's Team (Week 10)

April 16, 2008

It's time for another edition of Gene's Team, the weekly roundup of the standout athletes here at St. Thomas University. This week the golf team won the Florida Sun Conference Championship, the first time they have done so since 1998. In other news, the softball team went 2-2 this past week by dropping two to SCAD and winning two against Edward Waters. Unfortunately, the baseball team had one of their worst weeks this season by going 0-4 with loses to Embry Riddle and Lynn. Here are your standout players this week:

Je Her - The St. Thomas golf team are now your Florida Sun Conference Champions for the first time since 1998. This win was a team wide effort, but the Bobcat with the best finish was Her. Her finished 3rd overall in the tournament with a final score of 219. Two Bobcats, Alejandro Velasquez and Juan Ordonez, tied for 4th overall with a score of 221. St. Thomas will now wait until the end of April to find out if the team will receive an at-large berth to the NAIA Men's Golf Championship.

Katherine Landress - Kat pitched in both games against the Edward Waters Tigers this past Saturday and dominated the game. Over 8 innings on the day, she allowed 0 earned runs and struck out 6 batters. In 12 appearances this season Kat has a winning percentage of .571, second to pitcher Jenny Sanchez. With two double headers remaining in the regular season the Bobcats now sit at 17-15 overall and 8-10 in the Florida Sun Conference.

Monica Garcia - The most successful hitter in the series against the Tigers would have to be Garcia. Over both games, she batted .571 and batted in 4 runs. Garcia has been one of the Bobcats most consistent batters this season. She currently has a batting average of .304 and is second on the team in RBI's with 23. Next up for the Bobcats will be a double header this Friday at 2:00 PM against Webber International.

Juan Santana - It was a one of the worst weeks this season for the baseball team but Santana's stats in the series against Embry Riddle are still impressive. In the series Santana had a .571 batting average and never struck out. He has arguably been the Bobcat's most valuable player this season by leading the team in batting average, on base percentage, runs scored, hits, and stolen bases. The Bobcats will get a chance to redeem themselves when they travel to West Palm Beach Wednesday night to play Palm Beach Atlantic.
