Gene's Team (Week 7)

March 26, 2008

It's time for another edition of Gene's Team, the weekly roundup of the standout athletes here at St. Thomas University. The committee of one took a break for Holy Week, therefore this edition will cover the last two weeks of Bobcat sports. It was a successful two week span for the softball and baseball team with each going 5-3. The men's tennis team dropped matches against Weslyan and St. Peter's but managed to earn a victory against the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Here are your top performers over the last two weeks:

Cindy Castrillon - The softball team had two solid weeks and many players, such as Gina Guffanti and Claritza Valle, deserve to be recognized. With that said, Castrillon put on a jaw dropping performance in the 2nd game of the double header against Mt. St. Vincent. In the game Castrillon went 4 for 4 with a whopping 6 RBI's. How did she get 6 RBI's you ask? She achieved this by hitting an incredible 3 home runs in a 5 inning game. Castrillon currently leads the team in home runs and slugging percentage while trailing only Valle in hitting percentage. The softball team's next game will be on the 26th against Thomas in Cocoa Beach.

Nick Martinez - Martinez had an amazing series against Nyack which has earned him a spot on yet another Gene's Team. In the series Martinez had a .625 batting average and racked up 6 RBI's. If that wasn't enough Martinez also hit 2 Home runs during last Tuesday's double header. Martinez currently leads the Bobcats in RBI's, home runs, and slugging percentage. He is also third in hits behind Marlon Pascual and Juan Santana. Next up for the baseball team will be a home game against Tennessee Temple this Thursday.

Kenneth Evans - Evans makes the roster this week for his performance in the win against the New Jersey Institute of Technology. In his singles match he defeated his opponent by the score of 7-6, 6-3. Evans was also successful when he paired up with teammate Diego Paredes to win by the score of 8-1. The men's tennis team will play their final home match of the season on the 28th of March when they take on the College of the Bahamas.

Alejandro Velasquez - Recently the golf team competed at the Eagles Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fl. The Bobcats finished fourth overall and Velasquez was their top performer. He shot 225 in the tournament which was good enough for a seventh place finish. It was his fourth top ten finish on the season. This weekend the golf team will compete here in Miami at the Barry Invitational.
