Bobcats scrapy in loss

Feb. 8, 2008

Box Score

Daytona Beach , Fla. - The St. Thomas Bobcats ignored the No. 20 ranking in front of the Embry-Riddle Eagles name and their previous 22 point loss to the Eagles and played them tough. The Bobcats played a scrappy game but the Eagles recorded the 84-80 win.

Tyler DeBord scored a season-high 27 points for the Eagles (21-4, 6-3 in FSC). DeBord, who had 16 points in the first half alone, also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to record his 10th double-double of the season. Antonio Jones and Tracy Razz paced the Bobcat (8-14, 2-7 in FSC) offense tallying 25 points apiece. Ceser Jacobo Chavez had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds on the night.

Both teams hit 28 field goals on the night and the Bobcats had 10 three-pointers to the Eagles' seven. Free-throw shooting was the difference in the game as the Eagles made 21-of-24, while St. Thomas was 14-of-18 from the line.

Denver Cobb scored the first bucket of the game from behind the three-point line. The Eagles held a slim lead until Jacobo Chavez made a three to put the Bobcats in front at the 15:42 mark. The Bobcats stayed ahead for much of the first half leading by as many as six points, thanks to 12 first-half points by Antonio Jones.

With 4:56 left, DeBord got fouled on the way to basket and he made good on both free throw attempts to tie the game at 28. Ryan Ridder corralled the rebound after a Bobcat miss on the next possession and Cobb got the ball inside to DeBord whose dunk gave the Eagles a two-point advantage, their first since the 16:38 mark. Both teams continued to trade baskets and at the halftime break, the Eagles led 37-36.

The Eagles maintained the lead in the second half and went up by as many as nine points. The Bobcats, who played tough defense, kept the game within reach and knotted the score at 64-64 after a Jacobo Chavez tip in with 5:19 remaining in the contest. The Eagles would counter with a 9-0 run which allowed them to maintain momentum and secure the win. The Bobcats are on the road again for their next game Feb. 9, against Edward Watters at 8:00 PM
