Buccaneers beat Bobcats

Box Score

Miami Gardens, Fla. - The St. Thomas University baseball team fell to Barry University 13-3. Solo homeruns by both Adrian B. Gonzalez and J.C. Perez were not enough to rally the Bobcats from an early 3-0 deficit.

Buccaneer (30-15) pitcher Brian Mastin tossed five innings giving up only one run, while holding the Bobcats (19-21) to just four hits to earn his first win of the season. Jesus Blanco pitched seven inning and was credited with the loss for the Bobcats.

The Buccaneers put together their early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning scoring three runs on just one hit. Frezza reached on a two-out hit-by-pitch and then Servidio and Gomez walked to load the bases. Hernandez doubled in the trio of runs to give Barry the lead, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

St. Thomas cut into the then Buccaneer 4-0 lead scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth on a J.C. Perez homerun. The Buccaneers countered with a run in each of the subsequent innings making the score 6-1 in the seventh.

The game would be blown open in the eighth inning as the Bucaneers placed five runs on the board during the inning. The Bobcats tried to rally scoring runs in the seventh and ninth innings. The Gonzalez homerun was one of the runs.

Juan Santana went 2-for-5 to lead St. Thomas in hits and Lance Larimer was responsible for the third St. Thomas run in the seventh.

The Bobcats play again April 25, at home for a double header against Northwood University at 2 pm.
