INTRAMURAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

  1.  ELIGIBILITY:   All students, faculty, staff and alumni who complete proper paperwork (including residents of the dorms) are eligible to participate in intramurals.  Faculty members and staff members can form their separate teams.

 2.  INSURANCE:   ALL participants in team sports are required to have some form of accident insurance before they will be permitted to play.  Each participant must complete a liability form before participating in an intramural event.

 3.  FORFEITS:   Game time is forfeit time!!  If neither team has enough players to start the game, then a double forfeit will be declared and both teams will receive a loss.  If a team forfeits two games in a season, it will be dropped from the league and its record will stand.  The rest of the games scheduled will be forfeited to the scheduled opponent.

 4.  SCHEDULING:  All playing dates and times are final and may not be changed for personal reasons.  The Intramural Coordinator has the right to change dates and times because of inclement weather or other reasons.  If a reasonable number of players on one team has a conflict with the scheduled game time, then the captain must request that a game be rescheduled.  They must contact the Intramurals Coordinator at least 24 hours in advance of the game.

  5.  ROSTERS:  Participants may only play on one team during the playoffs.  Players may be added to the team's roster up until the last day of the regular season, this can be done in the athletics office or at the previous game.  Teams may add players at the time of the game provided they present proper student identification and complete required paperwork as long as roster is not already full.  If a team forfeits out of the league, those players are not eligible to participate for any other team.  Exceptions to this rule will only be given based on written appeals.

 6.  CAPTAINS:  Each team must have a captain.  The duties are:

a.       to attend specific meetings called 15 minutes before game time by the Intramurals Coordinator

b.      to pick up schedules and inform the team of game dates and times

c.       to discuss the rules and intramural policies with the team members

d.      to act as the teams spokesperson

 7.  EQUIPMENT:  The equipment for each contest will be at the game site one half-hour before the starting time.  If teams wish to practice, they may do so at this time.

 8.  FOOTWEAR:  METAL SPIKES ARE PROHIBITED!  Use of metal spikes will result in disqualification from that contest, and any future contest in that sport.

  9.  USE OF EQUIPMENT:  Most equipment is available to members of the university community during office hours only.  Anyone wishing to borrow equipment must leave their student/staff ID Intramural Coordinator (absolutely no exceptions).  If equipment is damaged or lost, the person borrowing it will be billed accordingly.

 10.  PROTESTS:  PROTESTS OF AN OFFICIAL'S JUDGEMENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!!  Judgment calls made by the officials are not subject to protest.  Protests on rule interpretations must be made known to a member of the intramural staff at the point in question.  The protesting team must submit a typewritten protest to the athletic office by 12 noon the day following the contest.  The team captain must schedule a meeting with the Director of Athletics for that day.  After this meeting, if the protest is upheld, a time will be scheduled to resume the game from the point of the protest.

 11.  AWARDS:  In order to be eligible for a championship t-shirt, a player must participate in at least on-half of the teams total games (including playoffs).

 12.  ALL-STARS:  Team captains from each sport are called together by the Intramurals Coordinator to select the league's all-stars.  This team may get the opportunity to compete against teams from other area colleges.

 13.  OFFICIALS:  Officials are always needed; the only requirement is the desire to do your best.  Contact the athletics office for more information.

 14.  CONDUCT OF PARTICIPANTS

a. The philosophy of the Intramural Sports Department is one of good sportsmanship and fair play by all. In order to encourage proper conduct during contests, officials, supervisors or administrative personnel shall make decisions on whether to warn, penalize or eject players or teams for poor sportsmanship. This includes conduct directed toward officials.

b. Participants/Teams ejected from any contest are suspended for 3 consecutive games (including play-offs). This is a minimum. Further penalty may be invoked depending upon the infraction.

c. Drinking of alcoholic beverages on the field or court by any player or spectator is strictly prohibited. Breach of this by-law will result in the elimination of the offending party or parties from intramural participation for the remainder of the season.

15. INSURANCE/ACCIDENTS

a. All participants must have primary insurance.  STU serves as a secondary insurance.

b. Questions regarding student coverage should be directed to the Office of Student Affairs at 305-628-6687. Questions regarding faculty or staff coverage should be directed to the Personnel Department at 305-628-6517.

c. Training room facilities are not available to intramural participants. In the event of injury please follow IM procedure policy as dictated by the IM staff member on location.

d. With any accident, regardless of severity, the IM staff member on site is required to fill out an accident report with Wackenhut Security. Please be patient and cooperative with this process.

e. All injuries in which blood is present will result in the injured party's removal from competition until such time as the blood is cleaned away and the wound sufficiently covered.
